All of us have faced struggle in our life. Scarily, the world is confronted by a burdening struggle. By large, our nation’s struggle is a constant battle against weight loss. In fact, overweightness affects two thirds of Americans.

Sometimes the jolt to take action may have been because of a scare from a doctor, your weight hitting an all time high, or just seeing yourself in an image or reflection.

  1. Engaging in high levels of physical activity. Okay, this is multi-parted. This includes resistance training, aerobic exercise, leisure time physical activity, and non exercise movements related to activities of daily living. Specifically, your success in weight loss should include 1 hour per day of exercise.
  2. Eating a diet that is low in calories and fat. Whoa! Wait a minute! That is not what all the new diet standards are showing. Yes, there are many trends in this weight loss game. Besides, what is a diet? At Fitness Oomph, we call it (D)aily (I)ntake (E)xpenditure (T)ampering. Honestly, any diet that affects calories in and out will induce a change. Truthfully, time and time again, most successful at weight loss maintenance report lower caloric intake, reduced portion sizes, reduced frequency of snacks, and, perhaps most consistently, reduction in the percentage of calories from fat.
  3. Self monitoring. Importantly, you first need to have a base measure. Moreover, you need to consistently track your weight, circumference measures, body composition, and yes, dietary intake and exercise.
  4. Maintaining a consistent eating pattern. By allowing flexibility in your diet, you increase your exposure to high-risk situations thereby, creating more opportunity for loss of control. In contrast, if you maintain a consistent diet regimen across the week and year, you are more likely to maintain their weight loss over time. 
  5. Catching slips before they wreak havoc. Obviously, your ability to catch missteps is also tied to self monitoring. If you do not know where you are, preventing small regains from turning into larger relapses will be difficult. Therefore, this skill appears critical to staying the course for your successful weight loss.
  6. Failure. Yes, that seems like a crazy concept, but we can learn some of life’s most important lessons from our failures. Interestingly, previous failures can help you leverage greater commitment, stricter dieting, and a greater role of exercise.

Honestly, weight loss is not a quick fix or an easy journey. Yet, you still can achieve the success you are striving to accomplish. Actually, your success to maintain your weight is increased after 2 -5 years of keeping your weight off.  Ultimately, you need to apply these 6 strategies into your life to lose and keep your weight loss from becoming weight regained.
